The corner, the early start and the tea

The corner

Corner Kettle sits on a corner of Sydney Road in Coburg, on the Route 19 tram line. The front window faces the street, so the first thing you see coming past is the counter and whatever has just come out of the oven.

Why 6am

A lot of Coburg is up before the city is. People are heading to early starts, coming off night shifts, or getting the kids sorted before work. Opening at six on weekdays means there's somewhere warm with a coffee and something baked when they pass.

The sheet

The specials depend on what came in and what's in season, so they're written fresh every morning before the doors open. When something runs out, it gets crossed off in red pen. The same sheet goes on this website, with today's date at the top, so you can check before you walk down.

The kettle

The coffee is done properly, and the tea gets the same attention: six loose-leaf teas, each brewed at its own temperature and for its own time, in a pot with a timer so it doesn't stew.

That's where the name comes from. The kettle's on, so come in.
